What might a city’s land be worth? Gold, silver, a king’s seal… Legend has it that Phaselis went for a few salted fish! The story goes that Lakios, leader of the colonists from Rhodes, bought this headland from a shepherd named Kylabras in exchange for salted fish; and in memory of the deal, the people of Phaselis went on offering salted fish to the shepherd’s memory for centuries… We doubt a more profitable bargain has ever been struck in history.
