Priene

“All that is mine I carry with me.” These words, attributed to Bias of Priene, one of the Seven Sages, are the memory of a day when the city was besieged. As the story goes, when the enemy approached, the people of Priene began to flee, loaded with whatever they could lay hands on; when Bias, walking empty-handed, was asked why he had taken nothing, he gave this answer. For to him, a person’s true wealth was their mind and their memories… Perhaps the wisest of the Seven Sages was the one who set out with the fewest belongings.
