Çeşnigir Bridge

The Seljuk palace had a curious office: the çeşnigir. His task was to taste the çeşni, the flavor, of the dishes brought to the sultan’s table; legend has it he was the first to learn whether a morsel held poison… Hardly an enviable job. Where the Kızılırmak passes through a rocky gorge stands a bridge that takes its name from this strange office.
