“Five minarets in Bitlis, come this way, come this way…” The first line of this folk song shows how few words it takes to describe a city: five minarets and a call… So why would a city choose to describe itself in so simple a voice? Perhaps because in a city wedged into a narrow valley and sunk into stone, there is no room for crowded words.
