In the second book of the ‘Republic’, Plato tells the story of a Lydian shepherd. After a storm and an earthquake split the ground open, the shepherd climbs down into the earth and finds a gold ring on the finger of a giant corpse; when he turns the ring, he becomes invisible… By the end of the story the shepherd has won over the queen, killed the king and seized the throne of Lydia. Tradition remembers this tale by the name of Gyges; Plato, for his part, leaves his readers with a hard question: if no one would ever see, would you still stay honest?
