In Greek mythology, two rocks called the Symplegades stood at the gateway to the Black Sea; if a ship tried to pass between them, they would clash together and smash it to pieces. When Jason and the Argonauts arrived here in search of the Golden Fleece, they first sent a dove flying through. The rocks slammed shut, but caught only the dove’s tail feathers; and as they parted again, the Argo, its crew straining at the oars, passed through… And from that day on, the rocks never closed again.
