Çankırı

On long winter nights in Çankırı, the yaran, circles of friends, would gather; folk songs were sung in turn, talk flowed, and anyone who broke the rules was disciplined with a sweet penalty. These gatherings are called yaran sohbeti. A tradition that warmed a city’s winter nights went on, together with Anatolia’s other sohbet gatherings, to reach UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
