Where is a city’s roof? The tiled roofs of its houses, or that distant peak on the horizon that greets the first sun each morning and sees off the last light each evening? Ask the people of Siirt and the answer comes without hesitation: Herekol… Visible even from the city, its snowy head resting against the sky, this mountain covers the whole province from above like the roof of a house. Siirt’s highest point is also its most silent.
