In 1909 an intriguing book was published in London: ‘The Thousand and One Churches’, Binbir Kilise in Turkish. Its authors were the archaeologist William Ramsay and Gertrude Bell, famed for her travels. So what were these two Britons looking for on the slopes of an extinct volcano in the middle of the Karaman plain?
