Pamukkale & Hierapolis

Can you picture a hillside that stays snow-white even in the middle of July, though it never snows? Those who saw it from afar likened it sometimes to a glacier, sometimes to a heap of cotton left out to dry; and so it got its name: Pamukkale, the “cotton castle”… Legend has it that this whiteness is the cotton giants once gathered from their fields and spread across the slope. And truth be told, the reality is hardly less wondrous than the legend.
