Bolu & Gölcük

Can a city’s name simply be “city”? Strange as it sounds, that, so the story goes, is exactly what Bolu’s name is. In Roman times this settlement was known as Klaudiopolis, the city of Claudius; the word “polis” in its name, passed from tongue to tongue over the centuries, was worn and filed down until only Bolu remained… The emperor’s name was forgotten, while the city remained simply itself.
