Once upon a time, a king who ruled in Korykos had an only daughter… Legend has it that the soothsayers foretold she would one day die of a snakebite. To save his daughter from this fate, the king had a castle built on the islet a few hundred meters off the shore and settled her there. So how did death reach a castle that no snake could swim to? The story goes that one day it came in a basket of grapes sent over from the shore… A father building a castle in the middle of the sea to protect his daughter may sound excessive; but fate hiding in a basket surely makes the tale all the sadder.
