Karatepe-Aslantaş

“In places where people once feared to walk the roads, in my days women could walk alone with their spindles in hand.” These words belong to Azatiwada, a lord who ruled at Karatepe some two thousand seven hundred years ago. In the inscriptions he had carved on the gates of his fortress, this is how he describes the peace and plenty he brought… A ruler who praises himself not for his wars but for roads women could walk without fear is surely something we don’t often come across in history.
