Lake Çıldır

Galloping horses across a lake? It may sound like a fairy tale at first, but on Lake Çıldır, once winter comes, it is just an ordinary day. The lake is sealed under thick ice; horses pull sleighs, fishermen cut holes in the ice and let their nets down into the water, and travelers walk across to Akçakale Island. Where boats roam in summer, sleigh tracks stretch out in winter… In Çıldır, winter is not the season that shuts people indoors, but the one that brings them out onto the ice.
