In the ancient world, Olympos was a name given to many mountains, much as so many cities today have a district called “Tepebaşı”, or “Hilltop”. In Anatolia alone there were at least two: one the Mysian Olympos we now call Uludağ, the other this mountain soaring from the sea to the sky on the Lycian coast… So what did a mountain need to bear the name of the home of the gods? Perhaps only this: when those living below raised their heads, they had to be able to see the place where its summit melted into the sky.
